Welcome to Doug Haft Photography.
I am an Athens, Alabama based photographer. I like to explore the world and capture landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife in such a way that the viewer is drawn into the story of the shot.
I was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1954. At about 10 years old, I was in an antique store with my grandparents and saw a Brownie box camera. The price was right, 15 cents as I recall, and my grandparents were kind enough to foot the bill. For the next few months, I was constantly pestering my parents for film (8 shots per roll goes fast!) and trips to the drug store for developing. Those early photos are long gone and little remembered. And being 10, my attention span was not very long! Baseball I believe took over most of my time. But looking back, that period was certainly the beginning of the enthusiasm for photography I have today.
At 19 I joined the navy and spent 12 years traveling the world and only dabbling in photography from time to time. I was caught up in raising a family, working long odd hours, and occasionally playing guitar in rock bands. Back then, everything was film based and, on a sailor’s pay, it was hard to justify the expense.
Fast forward to 2014. An upcoming vacation cruise to the Caribbean prompted me to re-kindle my joy of photography. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to visit and photograph some amazing places and things. Some distant (Hawaii and Alaska for example) and some not so distant (my back yard). It’s funny how one person’s distant, exotic location is another person’s “boring” home town. There is beauty and wonder everywhere, you just have to look for it!
